The idea of seeking treatment for substance abuse can be daunting. It is such a difficult decision to make in the first place. When the decision has been made, it is hard to know where to begin to make the right personal choice. It’s not as if we planned to ever need treatment or if it’s something people even openly talk about so that we could easily get a personal recommendation. With all of the stigma around addiction and so many competing ads for different treatment facilities, how can I find the right treatment for me?
Ask Questions
This is your life and your future, it is not a trip to the emergency room for food poisoning. Despite needing to find treatment quickly once your decision is made, there are a number of simple questions that can be asked in order to ensure that the decision you make is the right decision for you now and long term.
- Which Treatment Programs Are Offered? The Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or 12-Step program is the best-known program, but there are also other recovery programs available now, such as SMART Recovery, Refuge Recovery, and more. When a facility offers multiple programs, it shows that they understand that each person is unique and they are making an effort to give each person the right tools for them to succeed in recovery.
- What Types of Treatment Are Offered? There are many types of psychotherapy available within treatment. Finding out which types are offered and whether or not they are evidence-based treatments can help you to determine whether or not the program is right for you. Additionally, there may be other therapies offered, such as meditation, animal therapy, music or art therapies, and more. Ideally, you would want a variety of therapies to find which work best for you.
- Do I Have Options Within Treatment? Along with finding a variety of types of treatment, it is important to understand what your options are within the program and the level of flexibility that is available to meet your personal needs.
- What Is Expected of Me as a Client? What does the facility ask of you? What are the rules that everyone is expected to follow? How often are drug tests performed? What type of involvement will you have within the treatment community as far as responsibilities? Find out how hands-on your treatment will be. The more involved you are, the more invested you will be in your recovery.
- What Measurements for Success are Used? Is the program a set number of days or weeks, or will your personal recovery be considered as the measurement to leave treatment? What is the goal you are working toward in completing this portion of your treatment? How will they help you reach it?
- How is Relapse Managed? What type of relapse prevention is offered? If you do relapse, what is the treatment response? What do they do to help prevent multiple relapses?
- What Support is Offered After Treatment? A good facility will offer a way to stay connected after treatment, whether it is through meetings, alumni programs, opportunities to volunteer, or more. They will also offer information about outside support, meetings, and ways to stay invested in your recovery.
- Are There Any Unique Aspects to the Facility or Program? Does the facility have a unique location or have animals or specific outdoor activities that you relate well to? Is there a reason this program stands out to you specifically?
- How is the Financial Part Handled? Do they accept insurance? Which types of insurance? How is it billed? Is there a discount for cash-paying clients? Ask now to avoid surprises later.
Follow Your Heart
You may have other questions too, which should definitely be asked, but it should not take too many questions for you to determine if a facility or program is a good match for you. If you feel like they are just trying to sell you their program or that you are just a client, then you may not be happy with their treatment program. However, if you can sense the compassion and they treat you with respect and kindness, then you know that you can trust them and will most likely be treated the same throughout the treatment process. Find the program that best matches you and your desires to be well. Look for people who truly want to help you, no matter what, and who are invested in you as a human being. In the end, the best way to find treatment for you is to follow your heart.
